Academically Ineligible Appeals

PROCEDURES

Students desiring to appeal their AI status and return to Southern Nazarene University should:

Letters of appeal should be addressed to the director of the Academic Center for Excellence (use guidelines on the next page). Letters should be mailed or if time is crucial, sent electronically to lhenck@snu.edu.

Upon receipt of the appeal letter, students will receive a call from the Academic Center to set up a meeting with the director of ACE. Students living in the OKC area are required to meet in person, all others will be allowed to speak with the director via phone conversation.

The director will make the final decision concerning the students’ status and indicate the decision in the file. Each student will be informed of the decision either in writing or verbally. If approved the student will need to continue through the Academic Services probation process for final verification.

Final verification will take place during the registration process and involves: meeting with an Academic Counselor, in addition to reviewing and signing an Academic Probation contract.

Note: If a student needs to make an adjustment to their class schedule, they will need to meet with the Academic Services director.

LETTER OF APPEAL

Your letter of appeal should be written in formal narrative style. Please address your letter to the Director of the Academic Center for Excellence, Prof. Loral Henck. Use written language that is reflective, insightful and descriptive of your past, present and future situation/s. Please reinterpret this event so that the telling of your story not only describes your circumstances but also shows that you’re taking control and looking for ways to improve your situation.

INTRODUCTION

Begin your letter with an introductory paragraph. What is the statement you want to make about being on probation and the possibility of not returning to SNU this semester?

PAST

Explain briefly your academic background and preparedness (high school, beginning years of college, etc.). Explain the various events throughout the previous semesters that you feel impacted your academic success or lack thereof. (e.g. behavioral habits and discipline, family situations, study habits, time management, work schedule, etc.).

Throughout the past several semesters have you become more or less aware of your academic responsibilities to yourself and those with whom you are accountable and with whom you associate? Explain.

PRESENT

What changes (either positive or negative) took place this semester that impacted your academic progress. What areas of your academic life (study skills, test taking, retaining information, organizational) are difficult for you? Please approach this question honestly and insightfully.

FUTURE

What changes do you plan to make if you are allowed to return to SNU this semester (i.e. extra-curricular activities, positive accountability, time management, etc.). In addition to meeting the required conditions of probation, what other goals have you set for yourself in order to increase your GPA? Explain in detail your level of commitment and desire to achieve these goals?
