1. Any student wishing to connect a personal computer running Microsoft Windows to the
network must have a machine that is free of viruses and has the most recent
Microsoft security patches applied. Please follow these steps:
- Go to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com and install critical updates.
- SNU offers McAfee VirusScan for students connecting to the SNU
campus network. If you do not have anti-virus software for your computer, we
strongly recommend that you install McAfee VirusScan. McAfee VirusScan is
available for Windows 2000/XP and Mac users connected to the
campus network. Go to http://my.snu.edu/mcafee
and download and install the student version using the instructions found there.
- Clean.snu.edu has a number of free programs to scan for, protect against, and remove spyware and adware.
2. If a student’s network connection is disabled due to a virus-infected computer, there will be a $25 fee for IT technicians to clean the machine and enable the connection. The connection will be enabled only after the fee is paid at the Business Office and the receipt is presented to the IT Department in Herrick 143.
3. If students wish to provide wired network access to more than one device in their room, they should purchase either a hub or a switch to split the connection. This equipment is available in the University Bookstore as well as local computer retailers.
Routers, wired or
wireless, are not allowed and are unnecessary as all on-campus housing has wireless access. If a student’s network connection is disabled due to
a misconfigured router, the connection will remain disabled until the use of the
router is discontinued and a $25 reconnection fee is paid at the Business
Office and the receipt is presented to the IT Department in Herrick 143.
