Satisfactory Academic Progress Standards
Federal regulations require that any student who receives financial assistance must make satisfactory academic progress in the course that he/she is pursuing. Financial assistance funds include: Pell Grant, Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (SEOG), Work-Study, Perkins Loan, Stafford Student Loan, Parent Loan, Oklahoma Tuition Aid Grant (OTAG & OTEG) and SNU scholarships.
The Financial Assistance office will review the following for all students at the end of each semester.
I. MEASURABLE SATISFACTORY ACADEMIC PROGRESS
Hours Completed – for a student receiving financial assistance, he/she must complete the following hours:
Undergraduate Graduate
Full-time student 12 hrs. 9 hrs.
Three-quarter time student 9 hrs. 8 hrs.
Half-time student 6 hrs. 6 hrs.
The following shall not be considered as credit hours completed: F-Failing grade, W-Withdrawal, WP-Withdrawal Passing, I-Incomplete or Audit-No credit.
Grade Point Average – Every student receiving financial assistance must maintain a minimum 2.00 cumulative grade point average. By the end of the second academic year (regardless of the number of credits accrued) the student must have a 2.00 cumulative GPA or have an academic standing consistent with the requirements for graduation.
II. LIMITATION OF ELIGIBILITY OF FEDERAL ASSISTANCE
Students must complete their program of study before they have attempted more than 150 percent of the published number of required credits. For example, students enrolled in a program that requires 124 credit hours, must complete all required courses by the time they have completed 186 credit hours.
III. FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE PROBATION
In the event a student fails to complete the required number of hours or the required 1.50 semester and 2.00 cumulative GPA, he/she may continue to receive financial assistance but will be placed on probation the next semester. The student will be removed from probation if he/she completes the next following semester with 12 hours and a 2.00 GPA.
IV. SUSPENSION
Once a student has been placed on probation and fails to complete the required number of hours with a 2.00 semester GPA he/she will be placed on financial assistance suspension. This means termination of all financial assistance for the following semester.
V. REINSTATEMENT
To be reinstated from suspension, a student must on his/her own resources, achieve a semester GPA of at least 2.00 passing at least 12 credit hours in one semester. At that time, a student may reapply in writing for financial assistance for the following semester. When the student succeeds in achieving the 12 hours with a 2.00 semester GPA, he/she will be returned to financial assistance probation until two consecutive semesters of a 2.00 GPA are achieved.
VI. APPEALS
Students who are denied financial assistance will have the right to appeal. An appeal must be in writing to the Director of Financial Assistance and within 30 days of the suspension notice. The Director will review the appeal and with advice from the financial assistance committee determine whether the suspension is justified. The student will be advised in writing of the decision.
