MA Curriculum & Instruction: National Board for Professional Teaching Standards Emphasis

The Master of Arts in Curriculum & Instruction is designed for teachers who want to become more than "highly qualified" in their profession. Students completing the program will be equipped to offer the best instruction to their students to promote learning.

The degree is based on the following Five Core Propositions of the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards:

  1. Teachers are committed to students and their learning.
  2. Teachers know the subjects they teach and how to teach those subjects to students.
  3. Teachers are responsible for managing and monitoring student learning.
  4. Teachers think systematically about their practice and learn from experience.
  5. Teachers are members of learning communities.

Options:

 Master's Degree in Curriculum & Instruction only

  • 36 hours of course work.

 Master's Degree plus National Board for ProfessionalTeaching Standards (NBPTS) Process.

  • You must have three (3) years of teaching experience to enter the NBPTS process which begins in August following the completion of thrity (30) credits. This process runs through March and must be completed while teaching full-time. Results are announced by NBPTS the following December. The teacher receives the master's degree regardless of the outcome of the NBPTS process.

 National Board Mentoring only

  • NB candidates meet on alternate weeks for four (4) hours for mentoring through the process.  Note: Proceeding through the certification process does not guarantee National Board certification.

Program Design:

  • Classes meet one night per week with breaks between courses.
  • Students are in a cohort group that begins and completes the course of study together.
  • Classes are taught by graduate professors and National Board certified teachers.
  • Up to six (6) approved credits may be transferred into the program.
  • Classes will be taught in remote sites to groups of twelve (12) or more students.

Admissions Requirements

 Program Requirements
  • Hold a baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited college or university.
  • Submit three letters of recommendation.
  • Complete the student profile form, including essay.
  • If your undergraduate cumulative GPA is below 3.0, the Miller Analogies Test (MAT) is required. It may be taken at any university testing center. The SNU Testing Center (405 491 6323) gives the test by appointment for only $50.00. Please arrange the appointment a minimum of three (3) weeks in advance.

Graduate CollegeRequirements
  • Submit completed application form along with a one-time non-refundable application fee of $35.00.
  • Submit official transcripts from all colleges and univerisities attended. (SNU graduates do not need to request SNU transcript)
