Mathematics Department
The Mathematics Department at SNU is prepared to assist students in learning mathematics from Calculus through a wide variety of upper-level courses. Students develop close mentoring relationships with the faculty and spend numerous hours interacting with other math students.
Degree Opportunities
- Bachelor of Science
- Associate of Arts
Majors
- Mathematics
- Mathematics Education
Teacher Certification
SNU's Math Education program takes students above and beyond the normal teaching certification requirements, positioning graduates exceptionally well in today's market. Since 1990, SNU Math Education students have taken over 100 certification exams and have achieved a 100% passing rate.
Post-Graduate Opportunities
By customizing the upper-level curriculum, a student can acquire an excellent preparation for several career paths or graduate school. Actuarial Science and Statistics are two desirable careers open to a mathematical student. By combining mathematics with a major in computer science, physics, chemistry, or business, a student is prepared to start a career applying math in a field of interest. For students who are interested in advanced study, a math major at SNU will prepare the students for graduate school in Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, or Statistics, as well as Engineering, Physics, Computer Science, or Economics.
Faculty
The Mathematics faculty at SNU have a wide diversity of backgrounds in math, providing students with excellent instruction in all major branches of the field.
- Dr. V. Lee Turner, Professor of Mathematics; Chair, Department of Mathematics; Analysis and Applied Math
- Prof. Gary Lance, Associate Professor of Mathematics; Probability and Statistics
Student Opportunities
The SNU Math Department provides its majors with employment through grading papers and tutoring. Outside tutoring opportunities are also numerous. All Math majors engage in a personalized research project with a faculty member during their senior year.
Scholarships
Mathematics majors are eligible for a Science Heritage scholarship in addition to university scholarships. A Parker Scholarship is awarded to an outstanding sophomore for their final two years of college study.
Instruction and Technology
Technology is integrated into many mathematics courses. Graphing calculators and symbols algebra packages are used in the Calculus sequence. In upper-level courses, students use a variety of software packages along with writing their own programs.
