Applied Music Scholarships

  • Operationally funded
  • Awarded by committee audition in the areas of keyboard, voice, instrumental, percussion and strings
  • Restricted to incoming Freshman with a minimum ACT score of 20
  • Candidates are selected on personal character, music references, and personal philosophy
  • Interested candidates should request the SNU School of Music Handbook for additional background information

Ayres/Southall Family Memorial Scholarship – Strings

  • Established by Shirley N. Pelley, Michael Pelley, Cynthia Pelley & Kathy Pelley Evans
  • Available to Freshman with a minimum 23 ACT score
  • Upper-division students must have a minimum 2.5 GPA
  • Applicants must have a proficiency in area of stated interest
  • Applicant must be completing a degree in the SNU School of Music and involved in an official performance ensemble
  • Verifiable financial need

Bell, Jean Memorial Scholarship – Keyboard

  • Established and funded by Rev. James Bell, husband; and Kathy Bell Harris, daughter; friends and extended family
  • Provides a $1,000 annual award to an outstanding music major with a piano emphasis
  • Recipients are selected by an audition process which includes the following criteria:
    [1] A written application to the Chair, School of Music; deadline of March 15 for the following fall;
    [2] Selection based on a spring audition conducted by at least two members of the piano faculty, with audition consisting of two standard piano works, memorized and of contrasting stylistic character, not to exceed 15 minutes total;
    [3] Excellence in performance ability shall be principal criterion
  • Seniority in the degree program and financial need will be secondary considerations
  • Awards in $1,000 increments

Bethany Piano Teachers OMTA Scholarship

  • Funded by local-area piano teachers & SNU music alumnae
  • Restricted to former students of Bethany piano teachers
  • Awarded by audition only

Bolerjack, L. Ivalee Memorial Scholarship

  • Established by the Estate of L. Ivalee Bolerjack
  • Provides general need funds for students pursuing a degree in Music, Church Music or Music Education, with an emphasis in keyboard
  • Amount varies

Bolerjack, R.T. & Pat Scholarship – Keyboard

  • Established by Dr. R. T. & Patricia L. Bolerjack
  • Any classification
  • Completing a degree in Music with an emphasis in Piano or Organ
  • Must be taking private keyboard instruction while receiving scholarship

Boright, Cindy Memorial Scholarship

  • Established by Mark Boright, husband; and friends
  • Provides funds for music students who are members of the Church of the Nazarene
  • Amount varies

Bundy, Margretta Sanders Scholarship – Keyboard

  • Funded by Dr. Wanda M Rhodes, and friends and family of Margretta Bundy
  • Restricted to upper-division students – Freshman not eligible
  • Must be completing a Keyboard (Piano) emphasis
  • Applicant need not be a student majoring in the SNU School of Music
  • Verifiable financial need
  • Annual award of $250

Byron, Ruth Taylor Memorial Scholarship

  • Established through the Estate of Ruth Taylor Byron, professor emeritus
  • Provides funds for upperclassman with a minimum GPA of 3.0, and a 3.5 GPA in Music Theory classes taken during their previous two semesters
  • Scholarship may be renewed
  • Amount varies

Clarkson, Edward C. Memorial Scholarship

  • Funded by Dr. Stephen Agee, in honor of his XAE employee, Jan Clarkson
  • Provides a single $1,000 award to upper division music major with a minimum 3.0 GPA

Crill, Chester C. Memorial Scholarship

  • Established by Mrs. Alice Crill, wife
  • Provides scholarships for upper division music majors or minors who are members of the SNU Concert Chorale or its successor ensemble, exhibiting financial need and who exemplifies SNU's motto of "Character-Culture-Christ"
  • Amount varies

Davis, Laverne Memorial Scholarship - Keyboard

  • Established by Darlene (Buckles) Davis, wife
  • Provides scholarships for private piano lessons for full-time music majors with verified financial need
  • Candidates must be in good academic standing and reflect SNU's motto of "Character-Culture-Christ"
  • Amount varies

Dunn, Dr. Lester Vocal Scholarship

  • Established and funded by James & Dr. John Dunn, sons; friends, former music students and A Cappella members
  • Restricted to male Junior or Senior-level music majors with a concentration in voice or keyboard
  • Based on participation and ability

Dunn, Margaret Keyboard Scholarship

  • Established and funded by James & Dr. John Dunn, sons; friends, former music students and A Cappella members
  • Restricted to Junior or Senior level music majors
  • Based on participation and ability

Edwards Family Instrument Scholarship

  • Established by Mrs. Yvonne Edwards Mercer
  • Any classification eligible to apply

ENCORE Music Directors Scholarship

  • Established and funded by the SNU Friends of Music
  • Provides general awards to students majoring in music, or music education
  • Amount varies

Hale, Mr. & Mrs. John Memorial Scholarship – Voice

  • Established by the operatic baritone, Robert Hale, son
  • Provides a $1,000 award to an outstanding music major with a vocal concentration
  • Recipients will be selected by an audition process that includes the following criteria:
    [1] Only upper division major majors with a concentration in voice may apply
    [2] A written application to the Chair, SNU School of Music; deadline of March 15 for the fall semester
    [3] Recipients are selected by a spring performance audition consisting of standard works, memorized, in three languages, not to exceed 15 minutes total
  • Vocal talent and demonstrated progress shall be the primary basis for awarding the scholarship.
  • A recipient may receive the scholarship more than once
  • Awarded in $1,000 increments

Hale, Robert W. Strings Scholarship

  • Funded by a Centennial Benefit Recital by SNU alumnus, Robert W. Hale
  • Provides a $1,000 award to an outstanding music major with a strings concentration
  • Recipients will be selected by an audition process that includes the following criteria:
    [1] Only upper division music majors with a strings concentration may apply
    [2] A written application to the Chair, SNU School of Music, audition convened by the Chair of the School of Music and Strings faculty
    [3] String talent and demonstrated progress shall be primary basis for selection
    [4] Recipients must participate in an annual audition performing works from different musical periods, with selections to be chosen with the assistance of the Strings instructors
  • A student may repeat the scholarship more than once

Harris, John M. Hymnody Memorial Scholarship

  • Established by Mrs. Cynthia Harris Ingersol, granddaughter
  • Restricted to Junior or Senior level students pursuing a “Music with Ministry” degree track
  • Based on financial need
  • Contact School of Music for award guidelines

Hill, Double E. & Helen Scholarship

  • Established by Mrs. Orpha Hill, and funded by Dr. & Mrs. Double E. Hill
  • Awards aid to upper-division students preparing for a teaching career in music
  • Candidates must have a minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA, and exemplify SNU's motto
  • Amount varies

Imel, Jack & Joan Music Scholarship

  • Established by Jack & Joan Imel
  • Provides need-based awards to upperclassmen with a minimum GPA of 3.0
  • Recipients must be working to stay in school with active participation in the SNU School of Music ensembles
  • $500 minimum increments

Isaacs, Raleigh Memorial Scholarship – Voice

  • Established by Mrs. Lawana Isaacs, wife, and friends
  • Restricted senior students completing a major or minor in Music

Jones, Gregory Hale Memorial Scholarship – Composition

  • Established by Robert W. Hale, uncle
  • Any classification, restricted to full-time students
  • Applicant must be completing a degree in the SNU School of Music
  • 1st Preference for students with an exhibited ability in Composition

Knoodle, Arthur C. & Lula Dell Family Memorial Scholarship

  • Established through the Trust of Arthur C. & Lula Dell Knoodle
  • Restricted to upper-division students – Freshman not eligible
  • Applicant must be completing a degree in the SNU School of Music
  • Verifiable financial need
  • Amount varies

Marsh, Leonard H. & DeWanda Scholarship

  • Established by Mr. & Mrs. James Marsh
  • Provides need-based awards to music majors who are members of the SNU Concert Chorale or its successor ensemble
  • Selection shall be based on the following criteria preference:
    [1] Students from the Southeast Oklahoma District of the Church of the Nazarene
    [2] Oklahoma high school graduates
    [3] General members of the SNU Concert Chorale

  • Provides awards for students participating in instrumental ensembles

Newsom, Novelle & Carl Memorial Scholarship – Music Education

  • Restricted for students completing a Music Education degree track

  • Provides tuition assistance to Music majors and minors

Qualls, M.P. "Doc" & Beulah Memorial Scholarship

  • Established by Mr. & Mrs. James Marsh
  • Provides need-based scholarships for music majors who are members of the SNU Concert Chorale or its successor ensemble
  • Selection shall be based on the following criteria preference:
    [1] Students from the Southeast Oklahoma District of the Church of the Nazarene;
    [2] Oklahoma high school graduates; and
    [3] General members of the SNU Concert Chorale

Reighard, Mark & Audrey Keyboard Scholarship

  • Established by Dr. & Mrs. Mark Reighard
  • Provides assistance to Sophomore-level music majors who are pursuing a concentration in piano
  • Awards are based on:
    [1] A minimum cumulative 3.0GPA with a 3.3 GPA in music courses, and
    [2] Active participation in programs and ensembles in the School of Music
  • Applicants must audition in the spring before a jury of piano faculty or by consensus from the piano faculty provided the candidate has shown mastery through recitals or jury procedures

  • Established and funded by E. Kaye Schmidt Jones
  • Restricted to upper-division students – Freshman not eligible
  • Applicants must be completing a degree in the SNU School of Music
  • Verifiable financial need

Showalter, David & Karen Scholarship

  • Established and funded by David W. & Karen M. Showalter
  • Provides tuition assistance for students who demonstrate talent as "songwriters" and/or "performing artists"

Sides, Tommy Lee Memorial Scholarship – Church Music

  • Established by Wilbur & Virginia Sides, parents
  • 1st preference for students pursuing a “Music with Ministry” degree track
  • Any classification may apply

Oklahoma City Sorosis Philanthropic Club Scholarship

  • Established by the Sorosis Departmental Philanthropic Club of Oklahoma City
  • Provides awards to single marital status junior or senior year students, with a preference for females who are graduates of an Oklahoma high school
  • Recipients must be a "serious" student in the performing arts who are maintaining a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0
  • Award may be repeated

Strong, Roger & Ann Strings Scholarship

  • Established and funded by Dr. & Mrs. Roger Strong
  • Provides aid to gifted strings students participating in the SNU Strings Program
  • Eligibility is restricted to freshman music education majors with an emphasis in violin, viola, cello or string bass
  • Candidates must have a minimum high school GPA of 3.0; with
    [1] a "rating" of 1 at District and State Music Contests during the high school senior year, or
    [2] having participated in their state's All-State Orchestra
  • Recipients must enroll is applied string lesson on their instrument, and in SNU's chamber orchestra and the full orchestra each semester they receive this scholarship
  • Renewal after the first semester required a minimum 3.0 GPA in their first semester music courses
  • Amount varies

Terrell First Nazarene Music Ministry Scholarship

  • Funded annually by a gift from the Terrell (TX) First Church of the Nazarene, with a first preference to music majors preparing for a career as a Minister of Music
  • If candidates are not available, the grant may be awarded to individuals preparing to be a minister, evangelist or missionary in the Church of the Nazarene
  • Recipients may repeat through their undergraduate career
  • Amount - $250 per semester

Trimpa, Alta Memorial Scholarship

  • Established by the Estate of Alta Trimpa
  • Provides general scholarships for students pursuing a major or minor in music, or music education
  • Amount varies

Webster, Janie Music Scholarship – Keyboard or Organ

  • Established by Dale and Jane Webster
  • Provides awards for private piano or organ lessons to students who are dependents of full-time ministers in the Church of the Nazarene from the South Central Educational Region

Webster, Roy & Evelyn Scholarship
