For Southern Nazarene University (SNU) graduate Marlena Frye, earning her Bachelor of Science in Business Administration (BSBA) was about much more than crossing the stage and receiving a degree. Marlena wanted to show her daughters the benefit of investing in yourself, and that, through faith and perseverance, growth and opportunity are attainable at any stage of life.

Marlena has dedicated 24 years to a career in blood banking, starting in an entry-level position and working her way up to an executive leadership position. She is passionate about her field, which centers on providing life-saving blood products for patients who desperately need them. Marlena knew that earning her degree would enable her to make an even greater impact by helping her serve at a higher level.

“I pursued a college degree to deepen my knowledge, expand my opportunities, and grow into leadership roles within the field I’m passionate about,” Marlena shared. “It was a way to invest in myself, set an example for my daughters, and align my career path with the goals and values that matter most to me.”

Choosing SNU

Once she had decided to pursue a degree, Marlena needed to choose a university. She relied on trusted relationships to help inform her choice.

“I chose Southern Nazarene University because of the strong connections I already had with several close friends who graduated from SNU 25 years ago,” she said. “As a first-generation college graduate, I didn’t grow up with a strong tie to any particular school, but I was looking for a place where I could feel supported, challenged, and spiritually grounded. SNU provided that sense of belonging, along with a Christ-centered education that aligned with my values. It became more than just a school—it became a part of my story.”

That sense of belonging, paired with practical support, played an essential role in Marlena’s success at SNU.

“As a Christ-centered university, it fosters a strong sense of purpose, integrity, and service in its students,” she reflected. “For me, as a first-generation college graduate balancing a career and family, the flexibility and genuine support I received from faculty and staff made all the difference. SNU creates a learning environment where you’re not just a number—you’re known, encouraged, and equipped to thrive both professionally and spiritually.”

Growth and Impact

Marlena’s time in SNU’s BSBA program helped her grow and develop the confidence and skills necessary to continue advancing in her career.

“Earning my degree set me up for success by giving me the knowledge, confidence, and credibility to step into higher-level roles with greater responsibility,” she said. “It helped me refine critical thinking, communication, and leadership skills that I now use daily in my work.  Most importantly, it showed my daughters—and myself—that it's never too late to invest in your growth.”

Looking Ahead

Outside of her career, Marlena is a devoted mother, avid scuba diver, and a Christ follower who strives to live with integrity, purpose, and in service to others. Her journey is truly a testament to what can be achieved when you balance personal and professional priorities with faith, determination, and grace.

For Marlena, graduating Magna Cum Laude with her BSBA in 2024 was not only a huge milestone but also a message to her daughters and to anyone considering going back to school. While the path to pursuing a new goal is rarely easy, it is almost always deeply rewarding.
