[Bethany, OK] - During the spring semester of 2026, Southern Nazarene University’s School of Kinesiology helped students engage in anatomy in a new and dynamic way through a virtual reality pilot program.
The program used VR headsets to transform how students study the human body. Through interactive, three-dimensional models, students explored anatomical systems with an elevated level of depth and clarity.
“This initiative is an example of how we can differentiate the SNU experience by integrating immersive learning in meaningful ways that enhance both engagement and academic outcomes,” said Scott Marsee Ph.D., Vice President for Learning and Innovation.
Led by the School of Kinesiology, the program was designed to increase engagement and deepen understanding of complex concepts through hands-on exploration. “By integrating the VR headsets into both instruction and coursework, we were able to give students a more active and engaging way to learn anatomy,” said Dr. Jason Coles, School of Kinesiology Department Chair. “Students completed an assignment that required them to navigate the Human Anatomy VR application and identify specific anatomical landmarks, which strengthened their spatial understanding of the body. I also used the headsets during anatomy-focused class sessions by projecting the virtual environment to the classroom screen, allowing us to explore structures together in real time as a class.”
Student response has been positive, with many noting that the immersive learning environment helped them better visualize and retain key concepts.
One student shared, “The VR headsets really helped me in understanding the intrinsic muscles because you could see the layers. Seeing the anatomy in 3D helped to understand it better than just looking at a picture in a book.”
SNU is currently exploring further opportunities to expand immersive learning and virtual reality across additional programs, positioning the university at the forefront of innovative, student-centered education.
