Learning in Community: SNU’s Cohort Model

*Updated November 3, 2025

Higher education has its own language. If you're returning to college as an adult, you may find yourself navigating some new terms along the way. One term that plays an essential role in every Professional and Graduate Studies program at Southern Nazarene University (SNU) is cohort.  A cohort is a group of students who progress through a degree program together, supporting one another from the first course to graduation.

At SNU,  the cohort model is more than a way to schedule program start dates. It is an intentional model of learning designed for busy adults who want to find connection, encouragement, and real academic and professional growth while pursuing their degree, whether in-person or online.

What is a cohort model?

A cohort is a set group of students who begin a degree program together and continue through it together.  Instead of taking different classes at different times during the program, you'll join a learning community that follows the same course sequence,  shares discussions, and builds relationships throughout the program.

Why the Cohort Model matters for adult students

A Built-In Support System

Returning to school as a working adult to complete or further your degree is a significant milestone.  While this new journey is exciting, it can also be demanding. A cohort provides a shared experience, so you never feel like you're going through it alone. When life gets hectic, it helps to be able to talk it out and find encouragement from others who understand the workload, deadlines, and life balance you are managing.

Cohorts often stay connected outside of class, forming study groups, prayer or encouragement circles, and professional networking spaces. Whether you prefer to connect often or simply appreciate knowing support is there, the cohort model allows you to engage at the level that works for you.

Real-World Learning Through Shared Experience

SNU students come from a wide range of backgrounds, including business, healthcare, education, nonprofit work, the military, ministry, and more. When these backgrounds are brought together in an in-person or digital learning environment, class discussions reflect a variety of real-world workplace experiences and real challenges. You'll gain insight from peers in various industries, age groups, and life stages, which helps you apply what you're learning in ways that extend beyond the classroom.

"I will be forever grateful to the MAEL program for introducing me to my cohort, colleagues, and professors. It allowed me to build a network of peers whom I can reach out to with questions and guidance." - Taylor Upchurch, SNU Professional & Graduate Studies Alum

Professional Networking That Starts on Day One

A professional network can help open doors you may not have even known existed. Cohorts allow you to build relationships with people who may later become references, collaborators, team members, or even future employers. You get to demonstrate the quality of your work for people who get to see it first-hand, not just on a résumé.

Cohorts in online and in-person programs

SNU's Professional and Graduate Studies programs offer both in-person and online formats, with the cohort model at the core of both.

In-Person Cohorts

Students who attend classes on campus or at an SNU partnership or satellite site experience the community and collaboration of an in-person classroom learning environment while still maintaining a schedule designed for busy adults.

Online Cohorts

Students completing their degree online progress through their courses with the same group of peers, utilizing tools such as collaborative discussions, virtual meetings, and shared assignments to stay connected.

"The cohort model created deep professional relationships that continue to be sources of support and collaboration." - Curtis Piper, SNU Professional & Graduate Studies Alum
