Small Seeds, Lasting Impact
Featuring John Whitsett ’80

Every spring, something remarkable happens.
What looks dormant begins to stir. What seemed still begins to grow. And what was planted—often long ago—starts to show signs of life.
At Southern Nazarene University, we are reminded each year that growth does not begin only in the moment we see it. It begins much earlier, with something small, intentional, and often unseen.
That is why this season, we are reflecting on a simple but powerful truth: the seeds we plant today shape the impact we see tomorrow.
The Power of Small Beginnings
For alumnus John Whitsett ’80, that truth has shaped the way he gives back.
“I believe one of the great, and frequently overlooked, principles of life is that small, consistent investments over time result in an impact far beyond what we'd think.”
At SNU, we see this principle lived out every day. Students do not arrive fully formed—they grow through encouragement, challenge, and opportunity. Programs do not flourish overnight—they are built through steady investment. And lives are not changed in a single moment, but through consistent, faithful support over time.
What We Plant, Together
When alumni and friends give—whether in large ways or small ones—they are planting into something bigger than themselves.
“As it relates to SNU, I believe giving a small monthly gift allows me to have an impact far beyond what I'd otherwise have and bless this place that contributed so wonderfully to my life.”
That is the heart of it.
Not every seed looks significant in the moment. Not every gift feels like it changes everything. But together, those gifts create scholarships, open doors, sustain programs, and shape futures.
Faithful Investment Over Time
There is a reason planting happens in seasons. It requires patience, consistency, and trust in what is not yet visible.
John shared:
“I’m not wealthy to where I have the means to write a check with a lot of zeroes in it. But giving back in this way helps me do more than I’d otherwise be able to do.”
At SNU, we believe that kind of faithfulness matters. Over time, small acts of generosity become something much greater—a collective investment that impacts students, families, and communities for generations.
A Season to Begin
Spring reminds us that growth always starts small: a seed, a step, a decision to invest in something that matters.
“Over the long haul I believe it will make a great difference.”
We believe that too.
As we begin this Spring Planting series, we are grateful for alumni like John Whitsett, whose story reminds us that what is planted faithfully today can grow into something lasting tomorrow.
