Serving Those Who Served: How SNU Supports Veterans In Their Next Steps
Every 11th of November, our nation pauses to honor all the brave men and women who have worn the uniforms of the United States Armed Forces. Veterans Day is more than a holiday. It is a time for every American to take a moment to reflect on the service, sacrifice, and strength of those who have dedicated their lives to fighting for our country’s freedom.
At Southern Nazarene University (SNU), honoring our veterans holds a deeply personal significance, not just on Veterans Day, but every day. We recognize that for many veterans, the end of active service is just the beginning of the next step in their journey. This step may lead to meaningful work outside of military duty, the pursuit of higher education, and a renewed sense of purpose. SNU is proud to walk alongside veterans, active-duty service members, and their families as they take that next step.
A Unique and Valued Part of the SNU Community
Veterans bring a wealth of experience, leadership, and determination to the classroom. Strengths forged through military service, such as discipline, adaptability, teamwork, and resilience, enable veterans to succeed in higher education settings and beyond.
However, we know that transitioning from military to civilian life can also bring its own set of challenges. Finding a new sense of purpose, adjusting to academic life, and identifying the right career path can be overwhelming for anyone taking the next step in their professional journey. That’s why SNU’s Professional and Graduate Studies programs are designed with flexibility, support, and community in mind, meeting veterans where they are and helping them reach their goals.
Honoring Veterans Through Action
SNU’s commitment to veterans extends far beyond words. As a Yellow Ribbon Program participant, the university partners with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs to help cover tuition costs that go beyond standard GI Bill benefits.
SNU also complies with the Principles of Excellence Program and the DoD Voluntary Education Partnership MOU, ensuring transparency, high academic standards, and dedicated support for all military-affiliated students.
In addition, SNU has been recognized as a Veteran Employer Champion, a testament to the university’s broader commitment to supporting the veteran community through employment, education, and personal growth opportunities.
These commitments and recognitions symbolize SNU’s ongoing promise to honor the service of veterans by providing a community where they can continue to lead, learn, and make a difference.
Support That Understands the Journey
At the heart of SNU’s veteran support network is the VETS Center, a team of coaches, advisors, and mentors who are veterans and military family members themselves. With several decades of combined military experience, the VETS Center staff understands first-hand the unique strengths and challenges that come with military service.
“Our vision is to be a trusted battle buddy for our veteran and military community,” explains VETS Center Director Mark Nadig. “Our purpose is to serve others well—our veterans and military-affiliated students, our SNU family, and our community.”
The VETS Center offers personalized guidance in areas such as:
- Navigation VA education benefits and DoD tuition assistance
- Applying for the John & Tess Carter Military Scholarship Fund
- Accessing career support, including resume assistance, job search tools, and networking opportunities
- Connecting with tutoring and academic support resources
- Building a community and sense of belonging through peer support
“We see ourselves as bridge builders,” Nadig says. “We nurture partnerships and build relationships so we can connect our veterans to the experts. It’s all about serving them well.” Whether it's helping a new student use their VA benefits correctly or connecting a veteran graduate with career opportunities, the VETS Center serves as a trusted partner every step of the way.
Education That Fits the Mission
SNU’s adult and graduate degree programs are built with working professionals, including service members, in mind. With flexible online and evening class formats, veterans can earn their degree while managing career and family responsibilities.
Programs such as our Bachelor of Science in Business Administration, Bachelor of Science in Organizational Leadership, Master of Business Administration, and Master of Organizational Leadership are particularly well-suited for veterans looking to leverage their leadership and problem-solving skills in civilian careers.
Careers in Criminal Justice and Cybersecurity can also provide smooth transitions for veterans, leveraging their military experience and skills, as well as a continued mission to defend the safety and security of others.
Each course is grounded in SNU’s Christian mission and designed to empower students to serve others with excellence and integrity.
Continuing to Serve in New Ways
For many veterans, education serves as a bridge between their time of service and finding new meaning in their civilian life, allowing them to continue making a difference in new ways. Whether they pursue careers in business, education, healthcare, technology, or public service, SNU graduates carry with them the same values that defined their time in the military: service, leadership, and dedication.
SNU is honored to help veterans translate those same strengths into meaningful careers that positively impact their families, workplaces, and communities for years to come.
