Program Overview

An Associate of Arts in General Studies degree is the foundation upon which one will explore many aspects of educational interests that will contribute to a well-rounded view of the world and strengthen one's personal and professional growth. The Associate's degree will encompass a broad, liberal arts education integrated with Faith and learning that focuses on Critical Thinking and Problem Solving, Global Perspective, Science and Technology, Artistic Expression, Effective Communication, Christian sculptures and Traditions, and Social Responsibility.

On this journey, students have the opportunity to personalize the curriculum of interests that will increase their career opportunities. This degree program allows students to customize their experience by pairing general education classes with elective classes of personal interests. The Associate of Arts General Studies degree program costs vary according to the number of courses taken. Consulting with advisors upon enrolling will provide knowledge of the cost analysis.

Networking opportunities exist online, and while job placement is not currently offered, there are multiple opportunities for in-person networking at SNU career fairs, the annual Women in Leadership Symposium, and SNU's monthly Business and Leadership Network.

Prospective students should complete an Associate of Arts in General Studies degree at SNU because they have the opportunity to grow their skills and development, learn in a Faith-based environment with support, and enter industries that serve others.

Dr. Felecia Moriels

Dr. Felecia Moriels

Program Director

Felecia Moriels is the Director of General Education for Professional Studies, Program Director of the Associates of Arts in Business, and an Assistant Professor within the School of Professional and Graduate Studies. Felecia’s areas of expertise are entrepreneurship and business management, professional development, leadership and training, transformational programming, and student mentorship. Felecia has worked in Title lll as the Title llI-Specialist, advised the Student Society for Women, serves on several Academic Committees and Councils, and is currently in the Doctorate of Education Leadership and Administration program at SNU. 

Courses

This degree prepares students for more than the practical duties of their future careers—it prepares them to enter the field as an insightful, well-rounded individual ready to make a difference. For an in-depth understanding of learning outcomes, review the courses and descriptions below.

A General Education course that develops writing skills through expressive and explanatory writing, often in the context of the student's own experiences.

General Education course that continues to develop writing skills in more formal and academic contexts through practice in rhetoric, argumentation, and research.

Credit hours: 3

A beginning course which stresses that communication is an essential element of human existence. Basic communication theory, interpersonal skills, and public speaking skills are addressed.

Credit hours: 3

This is an introductory course providing computer experience in a wide variety of application software. Its purpose is to help the student increase confidence on a computer while facilitating a broad range of possibilities which may be used throughout their college and professional life. Applications include word processing, electronic spreadsheets, presentation software and desktop publishing.

A one semester course in which students are introduced to how a Christian perspective creates and deepens meaning in cultural, personal, social, and aesthetic issues; how to evaluate moral and ethical choices in light of sound interpretations of Christian scriptures, Christian traditions, and the Wesleyan theological perspective; and how Christians operationalize that analysis through active stewardship and service.

Old Testament Literature and Life (3 credit hours)
Identifies the basic knowledge of the Bible—story line, main characters, books, great chapters, and teaching—and develops skills in understanding and communicating their meaning. Based on the conviction of the SNU Faculty that a working knowledge of the Bible is essential for the fulfillment of the University mission.

New Testament Literature and Life (3 credit hours)
A sophomore-level General Education course with the same purpose, focusing on the New Testament storyline, characters, books, chapters, and teachings.

Introduction to Literature (3 credit hours)
Introduces students to critically reading written, visual, and oral texts, with focus on global literatures and cultural contexts. Prerequisite: Passing grades in Composition I & II or equivalent credit.

Aesthetics (3 credit hours)
Learn to evaluate artistic expressions—including fine arts, music, drama, literature, media, and human movement—through political, sociological, anthropological, and aesthetic theories.

Introduction to Fine Arts (3 credit hours)
Explores art, architecture, music, and popular culture in Western traditions. Includes cultural field experiences in Oklahoma City. Prerequisite: Aesthetics recommended.

American Cinema (3 credit hours)
A survey of American film history and culture as art form, industry, and system of representation and communication.

Digital Photography (3 credit hours)
Introduces digital photography as an art medium. Includes camera controls, post-processing with Adobe Lightroom, and study of photography as an art form.

History of American Popular Music (3 credit hours)
Examines roots, evolution, and styles of American popular music, important movements and personalities, and develops critical listening skills.

Educational Foundations of Teaching Practice (3 credit hours)
Study of historical and current educational philosophy, theory, and practice. Explores teaching profession, effective instruction, and management. Note: Does not qualify under Professional Education requirements for a traditional program.

Educational Psychology (3 credit hours)
Introduces psychological principles and theories to influence teaching decisions, with focus on diversity, developmental theories, instructional strategies, and assessments.

Social Problems (3 credit hours)
Systematic analysis of significant social problems, with emphasis on social science contributions to understanding and solutions.

Sociology of the Family (3 credit hours)
Examines origin, development, functions, and problems of the family as a social institution, and effects of modern conditions on family life.

Juvenile Delinquency (3 credit hours)
Overview of U.S. Juvenile Justice System, its history, theoretical paradigms, and current issues.

Introduction to the Holocaust (3 credit hours)
Considers moral, religious, and theological implications of Nazi Germany’s war against the Jews and other groups, known as the Shoah.

The Modern World, 1500–Present (3 credit hours)
Overview of human civilization from the Atlantic Revolutions to today, analyzing foundations of global society.

Diversity in the Workplace (3 credit hours)
Explores organizational diversity, racial/ethnic groups, protected classes, and comparative perspectives. Focuses on cultivating respect and understanding.

Cultural Anthropology for the Ministry (3 credit hours)
Survey of world cultures with focus on non-Western societies and tools for effective intercultural communication.

Introduction to World Religions (3 credit hours)
Introduces major world religions (Hinduism, Islam, Buddhism, Judaism, Sikhism, etc.) and promotes awareness of diverse traditions.

Intercultural Communication (3 credit hours)
Explores communication across cultures, obstacles to understanding, and strategies for overcoming them.

Exploring Leadership (3 credit hours)
Examines leadership for organizational performance. Students explore their leadership styles and learn to enhance abilities of employees and peers.

Introduction to Criminal Justice (3 credit hours)
Overview of U.S. criminal justice system (police, courts, corrections, probation, parole), problems, trends, and cross-cultural comparisons.

Punishment in the United States (3 credit hours)
Study of the nature, functions, and causes of punishment in the U.S., with focus on penal control, race, poverty, media, corporations, and the state.

Credit hours: 30

Enrolling at SNU is a simple process. With rolling start dates, there’s no need to wait months at a time to begin your educational journey. Plus, our generous transfer policy and prior learning assessment can shorten your path to graduation. Once you are ready, take the following steps:

Step 2: Complete your FAFSA at fafsa.gov using school code 003149

 

Step 3: Send official transcripts from any colleges you have attended to SNU at pgsadmissions@snu.edu or ATTN: SNU PGS Admissions, Southern Nazarene University, 6729 NW 39th Expressway, Bethany, OK 73008.

You will be contacted regarding any supporting materials we may need. Upon acceptance, your student success advisor will help you enroll and prepare for success as an adult student at SNU.

Locations

All PTA didactic coursework will be offered in-person at SNU’s main campus in Bethany, OK. Clinical placements will be offered across the United States; it is not guaranteed that a student will receive clinical placement in their state of residence. Students will be responsible for their own transportation and housing while on clinical rotations.
